Form Factor and Compatibility
SanDisk 256GB cards are available in two primary formats: SD (full-size, 24mm x 32mm) and microSD (10.92mm x 14.99mm). Both are commonly used across a wide range of devices, including digital cameras, smartphones, tablets, action cameras, and gaming consoles. Standard SD cards are compatible with SDXC host devices; microSD cards typically come with a full-size SD adapter for use in standard SD slots.
Interface and Speed Class
The performance of SanDisk 256GB cards depends largely on the bus interface. UHS-I cards, such as the Extreme PRO SD UHS-I with read speeds up to 200MB/s and write speeds up to 140MB/s, are suitable for most use cases. The newer SanDisk microSD Express card features a PCIe NVMe interface, delivering significantly faster read speeds up to 880MB/s and write speeds up to 650MB/s within the microSD form factor.
For video recording, the Video Speed Class rating is critical. V30 and U3 rated cards support sustained write speeds of at least 30MB/s, making them suitable for 4K UHD video. V60 rated cards, found on higher-end UHS-II models, support sustained write speeds of at least 60MB/s for more demanding video formats. A1 and A2 rated cards are optimized for running applications directly from the card, delivering faster random read/write speeds on compatible Android devices and smartphones. Class 10 is the baseline speed rating for all these models.
